Game mechanics: Damage from front, side, back

Basics

This article is devoted to the dependence of damage on the enemy's position relative to your character. The way it was conceived and implemented by the Korean developers NCSoft. You may encounter this mechanic on official and PTS servers, and it works the same way on the servers of the E-Global Masterwork project.

First, let's define the concepts of "face", "side" and "back". If you put the character in the centre of the circle, you can divide it into sectors:

  • Face - front quarter, 90 degrees from 315° to 45°
  • Right side - right quarter, 90 degrees from 45° to 135°
  • Back - rear quarter, 90 degrees from 135° to 225°
  • Left side - left quarter, 90 degrees from 225° to 315°

Pay attention!
This mechanic applies not only to characters, but also to monsters.

Sides and damage

The direction of the attack determines the chances of certain variables when calculating damage.

Side (left, right):

  • +20% to regular Attack Accuracy (auto attack)
  • +20% P. Critical Rate
  • +10% to the chance of Blow skills

Back:

  • +30% to regular Attack Accuracy (auto attack)
  • +30% P. Critical Rate
  • +30% to the chance of Blow skills
Blow skill class including:

Pay attention!
Damage effectiveness zones work differently for "Backstab" class skills.

The area around the character is divided into two hemispheres - the front (from 270° to 90°) and the back (from 90° to 270°).

  • When attacking the front hemisphere, the success chance of the skill is 3%
  • When attacking the rear hemisphere, the success chance of the skill is 100%

The "Backstab" class includes skills Backstab Backstab Lv. 1 and Knives Out Knives Out Lv. 1

Sides and defense

Blocking with a shield only works when attacking the character's front side. When attacking from the side or the back, the chance of blocking with a shield is zero.

Some skills increase the shield blocking zone to full (360°). While these skills are in effect, blocking with a shield is equally effective when attacking any side of the character. Such skills include:
